Vertebrae, the most advanced cable housing in the world

How long is Vertebrae cable housing?

The standard length of all self-assembly kits is 1.5 metres. If that isn’t long enough, you can simply add an extension kit. If doing it yourself isn’t your thing, simply measure the length of your old cable housing and order all the sections you need individually.

Can I run full length outer cable housing?

Yes! If your frame has outer cable guides and not cable stops, Vertebrae will work better than ever.

Is Vertebrae suitable for internal cable routing?

Yes, we have successfully assembled many bikes with full length brake & gear housing. It really depends on the make and model of the frame you are using. To check if Vertebrae is compatible with your bicycle frame, just measure the diameter of your frame’s cable entry & exit points.

What is the outer diameter of Vertebrae cable housing?

The outer diameter of the vertebrae are 4.6mm, so they will fit in practically all brake calipers & shiftlevers without ferrules. With the special FEP wrap, vertebrae housing measures 5.1mm in diameter; with the standard spinal wrap (polyolefin) the outer diameter is 5.3 – 5.4mm.

Where is vertebrae cable housing made?

The ceramic bits are made in USA. The teflon liner is sourced from either Ireland or USA. All of the printing, packaging and assembly steps happen in Australia. We also get the outer wrap from various suppliers in Australia. We use jagwire stainless steel cables which come from Taiwan.

What is your return policy?

If you’re not 100% happy, we’ll refund 100% of your money! That’s our policy. We’ll even give you a month to test them out. So even if they’re opened and used, we’ll still give you all of your money back. We are that confident you’ll like them after trying them.

Do you have a product guarantee?

All of our products are guaranteed against manufacturer’s defects for a period of 1 year from the time that they are shipped. So far we have not had a single product returned.

I am swapping between Shimano/SRAM and Campy. Will it still be compatible?

Yes the brake housing is interchangeable between Shimano/SRAM and Campy. The only real difference is in the shape of the cable ends and the use of ferrules in the SRAM & shimano shiftlevers.

How do I care for them?

Keep them clean by washing the outside with soapy water. That’s it. That’s all you need to do.

Methanol can remove any grease stains.

The alumina and teflon parts are very resistant to all sorts of nasty chemicals, but the outer protective polyolefin sleeve isn’t quite so inert. Avoid the use of strong solvents and acids on the outer spinal wrap. Inspect the lines carefully & periodically.

If you notice any defects or cracks in the ceramic parts, please, don’t be a fool – just stop using them. It is okay to reuse old ceramic vertebrae if they don’t have any chips in them.

I am preparing a retro MTB. Will it work on that?

Absolutely! Vertebrae ceramic housing is suitable for all cable operated bicycles including cyclocross, cross-country, all-mountain, freeride, downhill, BMX singlespeed, fixed gear, tandem, recumbents, trikes and any other style of bike you can imagine.

I am robotics engineer. Will your special cable housing function correctly with my robot?

Yes! You’ll get more precise movements, much better performance and greater reliability.

I am a weightweenie. What do they weigh?

The weight of vertebrae ceramic gear housing is 48 grams per metre, and an additional 3.7 g/m for the teflon liner. The weight of vertebrae ceramic brake housing is approximately 45 grams per metre, and an additional gram for the teflon liner. One metre of spinal wrap adds another 3 or 4 grams per metre.

What type of lubrication do you recommend?

We do not recommend the use of any lubrication on the housing or cables. The pure teflon liner has one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any man-made or synthetic material. Applying liquid lubricants attracts dust and dirt, which can degrade the performance.

Are vertebrae ceramic brake and gear housing compatible with Powercordz?

Vertebrae ceramic housing is 100% compatible with the new 1.2mm powercordz gear cables. Unfortunately, vertebrae ceramic housing is not compatible with either 1.5 or 1.75mm power cordz brake / gear cables.
