The human vertebral column is a segmented design composed of bone (which is essentially a ceramic matrix composite) and inter-vertebral discs made of cartilage (a complex polymeric material).

Just like our Vértebræ Brake Housing, the human spine is a flexible structure that can support loads that are many times its own weight.

It evolved naturally over millions of years to protect the delicate spinal cord that runs parallel alongside, while still enabling a significant degree of overall shock absorption in the vertical direction.
